From home to department store, apartments, and historic hotel.

The library door to FlatIron boutique hotel - sandstone historic inn

Nestled in the heart of Hot Springs, South Dakota, the FlatIron stands as a testament to the town's rich history and its evolution into a modern tourist destination. This unique triangular structure, reminiscent of its more famous New York City namesake, has been a landmark in Hot Springs for over a century. Recently transformed into a boutique hotel, the FlatIron offers visitors a chance to step back in time while enjoying contemporary luxuries.

A Glimpse into History

The building now known as the FlatIron was originally constructed in 1911 by businessman and local entrepreneur George Gibson. Initially called the Gibson House, it was designed in the distinctive "FlatIron" style, characterized by its wedge-shaped form inspired by the FlatIron Building in New York City, albeit on a much smaller scale.

The Gibson House served as a residence for Gibson and his family, reflecting the architectural enthusiasm of the early 20th century. Its narrow, triangular footprint was a bold architectural choice for Hot Springs, giving it a prominent and somewhat avant-garde presence in the town.

Architectural Significance

The building's unique shape and design deviate from traditional residential architecture of its time. Constructed with locally quarried pink sandstone, it became an iconic part of Hot Springs' architectural landscape. The FlatIron's distinctive form made it stand out among the other buildings in town, cementing its status as a local landmark from the very beginning.

Years of Change

As Hot Springs' popularity as a health resort waned in the mid-20th century, the Gibson House, like many structures in town, saw various changes in use. After the Gibson family moved out, the house was repurposed for different commercial endeavors. It housed various businesses over the decades, including a restaurant and a small boutique.

In the late 20th century, the building was officially renamed the FlatIron, acknowledging its architectural style. During this period, it gained recognition for its historical and architectural significance, with efforts made to preserve its unique character while adapting it for modern uses.

Preservation Efforts

In the 2000s, there was a renewed interest in preserving historic buildings in Hot Springs, and the FlatIron Building became a focal point of these efforts. Local preservationists and the community worked together to restore and maintain the building, ensuring its continued role as a significant piece of the town's heritage.

A New Chapter

Recognizing the FlatIron's potential, local developers embarked on an ambitious restoration project to breathe new life into the landmark. Today, the FlatIron has been meticulously restored and repurposed as a boutique hotel, offering visitors a unique blend of historical charm and modern comfort.
